Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

ADHD is a neurological disorder that has been found to primarily affect children. It has been shown to affect more boys than girls. Classic signs that parents or teachers notice are:
  • Inattention, hyperactivity and being easily distracted
  • Difficulty concentrating and sitting still
  • Inability to control impulsive thoughts and behaviors
  • Easily distracted by noises and activities
  • Always moving-fingers, hands, arms, feet or legs
Our approach to treating ADHD is a team approach. Because ADHD appears as a neurological disorder and chiropractic care helps reduce nervous system disturbances, many patients who want a natural, non-drug solution for their child have found chiropractic care helpful, even miraculous. With many children with ADHD, nutritional and lifestyle changes are also needed. Our team approach also, in many cases, involves our Medical Director, to rule out any underlying medical pathology. With many children, Acupuncture and Massage can also be helpful. For most children with ADHD, our Registered Dietitian plays a key role in helping to identify other dietary contributing factors, such as:
  • Food dyes, preservatives and additives in your child's diet
  • Foods grown with pesticides, herbicides, hormones and other unhealthy substances
  • Food allergies, such as dairy or gluten
  • Diets high in sugars and artificial sweeteners
Avoiding these food types are wise choices whether your child has the symptoms associated with ADHD or not. Traditional treatment of ADHD is usually an artificial approach to controlling the symptoms with regular doses of methylphenidate, more commonly known as Ritalin®. Ritalin® is a schedule II controlled substance related to, and producing similar effects as, amphetamines and cocaine. The side effects include: personality changes and permanent changes to the brain. Hyperactivity isn't the result of a Ritalin® shortage! Instead, we look for disturbances to the child's nervous system and unhealthy food choices as probable causes to ADHD and its symptoms. With many children diagnosed with ADHD, spinal distortions in the upper neck exist. In fact, this link between the spine, brain stem dysfunction and ADHD is common. A thorough chiropractic examination can reveal noticeable spinal distortion, even a reversal of the normal neck curve. With a schedule of safe and natural chiropractic adjustments and simple changes in diet, these symptoms often resolve while reducing your child's nervous system tension and improving his or her overall health. More and more are wisely turning to chiropractic and other more natural approaches. As parents, we want the best for our children. If your child exhibits the symptoms of ADHD, you know it affects virtually everyone your child is in contact with. Before you submit to drug therapy, make an appointment for a chiropractic and nutritional evaluation. Call our office today!

There are many signs of an allergic reaction: Itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, skin rash, or even more serious reactions including constricted air passageways, vomiting and even death-All of which resulting from a handful of peanuts, an encounter with a cat or microscopic grains of pollen in the air. If everyone reacted to these common substances, we could fix the blame squarely on the nut, dander, shellfish or pollen. But not everyone reacts. So, in many cases, it's not the allergen! If it's not the allergen, then what is it?

Your nervous system is the master system that orchestrates your immune system, glandular system, respiratory system and every other system that reacts inappropriately to an allergen. Normally, these systems help you respond and adapt to the world around you. But suffering from uncontrollable sneezing around a house cat is an inappropriate reaction. If your nervous system isn't working right, you don't work right.

At HFHC, we take a team approach to your allergies. Through our Medical care and Nutritional Care, we rule out major allergens, nutritional and environmental factors. Chiropractic care and Acupuncture have both been shown to be helpful with allergies. Our approach to allergies focuses on your body, nervous system and also on identifying allergens that you may have been exposed to. By using an integrated approach you get the best of both worlds. Identifying and removing allergens from your life and at the same time identifying stress to your nervous system and eliminating that stress allows your body to function better. Each of us was born with the capacity to withstand or adapt to stress. If we're unable to deal with things we eat, breathe or come into contact with, it may be because our margin to adapt is used up.

Pretend that this bucket represents your capacity to adapt to the physical, emotional and chemical stresses of life. Every stressful encounter your body faces fills up your bucket. If your bucket is already full and you encounter pollen, foods or other chemicals, your bucket overflows.

When that happens, people say they're having an allergic reaction. But what they're really saying is, "I've lost my ability to adapt. My margin is used up."

Chiropractic care does not treat allergies. Instead, we look for ways to restore your ability to adapt to allergens by locating and reducing disturbances to your nervous system, which allows your body to be healthier and your bucket to be empty. In addition, our Nutritional Counseling will help you make simple changes in your diet so you can significantly reduce the frequency with which you are exposed to the allergens. Simple, really! We'd love to discuss your specific allergy issue and how we may be able to help. Email or give our office a call.

According to the NIMH, Anxiety Disorders affect about 40 million American adults age 18 years and older (about 18%) in a given year,1 causing them to be filled with fearfulness and uncertainty. Unlike the relatively mild, brief anxiety caused by a stressful event (such as speaking in public or a first date), anxiety disorders last at least 6 months and can get worse if they are not treated. Anxiety disorders commonly occur along with other mental or physical illnesses, including alcohol or substance abuse, which may mask anxiety symptoms or make them worse. In some cases, these other illnesses need to be treated before a person will respond to treatment for the anxiety disorder. For many people who suffer from anxiety attacks, it is not uncommon to have an increase in blood pressure and in heart rate.

In many health care offices, general anxiety disorders are treated with medication, specific types of psychotherapy, or both. In our office we use a multifaceted approach with the intent to identify the stressors that often lead to anxiety and to implement treatment that will make these stressors less likely to lead to the anxiety they often times provoke. Conservative and more holistic treatment options, such as Chiropractic care, Exercise with Oxygen, Natural Herbs and Supplements and Massage therapy are used in conjunction with the more traditional medical approaches. With many patients, making lifestyle changes and different choices helps in eliminating anxiety. Treatment choices depend on the problem and the person's preference.

Our staff has extensive experience effectively managing these types of disorders. Call our office or email us so we can discuss the possibilities and get your questions answered. If you are tired of suffering and want to take back control of your health and of your life, call our office today!

Arm Pain / Arm Numbness

Arm pain and/or numbness can occur from a variety of conditions and injuries. Although arm pain and numbness usually is caused by conditions in the neck or upper back, there can be other causes as well. Sometimes other diseases, like Diabetes and HIV can cause these types of neurological symptoms. These kinds of symptoms should not be taken lightly and are often a warning sign of another more serious problem. Our experienced team will properly identify the cause of your pain and / or numbness.

Commonly, these symptoms are caused by injuries in the neck that involve the spine, its discs and surrounding tissue. Injuries to these areas can result in nerve irritation, which then results in pain and sometimes numbness. For many, poor posture often plays a missed role in the cause of neck pain and numbness. Our integrated approach identifies the cause or causes of these symptoms and then uses an integrated approach to resolve not only the symptoms, but also the cause.

Medical Care, Chiropractic Care and Physical Therapy all can provide treatment options for you. For those neck injuries that involve the discs and that are more severe, Spinal Decompression and Exercise with Oxygen (EWOT) may be added to the treatment plan, to resolve your pain and suffering. Our unique approach to arm pain integrates the best treatment options that Medical Care, Chiropractic, Physical Therapy and Massage therapy offer, to provide you with the appropriate treatment to not only eliminate your symptoms, but also to correct the cause. For many people who present with arm pain and / or numbness, poor posture is a significant factor. Unfortunately, most Medical Doctors, Physical Therapists and Chiropractors identify and then correct this problem. At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine, our integrated approach does not overlook this critical problem, and offers you the treatment to not only resolve the pain, but also to resolve the poor posture. Call our office today to learn more about how we can help you!

Asthma cases seem to be rising at an alarming rate. Some think it's due to a combination of factors, especially the increase of chemicals in our environment. These days, airtight, super-insulated homes can trap chemicals, molds, formaldehyde and other irritants. Even the increasing use of vaccinations, cesarean births, antibiotics and our fascination with germ killing has been cited as possible causes of asthma. Our approach to helping patients with asthma incorporates the latest in medical treatment, a comprehensive look at lifestyle and dietary habits, environmental factors and complimenting that with cutting edge chiropractic care.

Chiropractic is not a treatment for asthma. However, many who suffer from asthma report improvement by receiving chiropractic care. Considerable research documents the link between the spinal column, the nervous system and the respiratory system. This is why so many people have mentioned improved breathing by consulting our office. In fact, research published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research documented the results experienced by 81 children with asthma who received chiropractic care. The two-month study revealed that those under care saw a 45% decrease in the number of "attacks" and that 31% of the subjects voluntarily chose to decrease their medication. All this from improved nervous system control of the lungs.

Your diaphragm is the primary muscle used for breathing. Nerves that control each breath leave your brain and exit the spinal cord in the mid-neck (C3, C4 and C5) area. Spinal problems in this area can have a profound affect on the nerve supply to the diaphragm. Reducing subluxations in the spine to help restore proper nervous system control of the lungs, combined with better food choices, can pave the path to improved function and a healthier life!

When these more conservative therapies are not enough, conventional medical treatment options can also be used. With many patients, after consistent alternative treatment options are used, the use of medical treatment is no longer needed.

Call our office or email us and let's discuss the possibilities and get your questions answered.

Auto Accidents

It started with a routine trip to the store. Suddenly you hear a screeching of tires and the harsh sound of metal hitting metal. In the split second before you can brace yourself, you feel your car moving from some unseen force! It's tempting to minimize your own injuries because your car has sustained little or no damage. Research shows that occupants can be injured considerably more than what you'd expect from a dented fender or a broken taillight.

The Traditional Medical Solution

If you visit the emergency room, you may be given a clean bill of health because you don't have any broken bones. You might get a prescription to reduce the muscle spasms caused by structural changes in your neck or lower back.

You don't have a drug shortage! After what you've been through, you'll need a team of health professionals that truly understand soft tissue injuries, spinal biomechanics and rehabilitation strategies.

We Can Help

Whether it was a little incident in the parking lot, or two cars attempting to occupy the same space in an intersection, you need people who know how to work with lawyers and insurance companies. We offer a team approach that utilizes when appropriate, medical treatment, chiropractic care, physical therapy, acupuncture and massage therapy.

If you've been in a car accident, give us a call. We've been through this many times and can help put this behind you once and for all.

Common Questions

Q: Why do I have pain in my arms and hands?

A: Because the nerves to the arms and hands exit the spine through the injured area of the neck, numbness and tingling are common. Even lower back pain can result directly from the trauma, or as a reaction to the loss of proper spinal curves.

Q: Why did my headaches start more than a week after my accident?

A: Whether you've been in an accident, stressed at work, or over-exerted yourself in the garden, your body is constantly adapting to the environment. When your capacity to adapt is exhausted, symptoms can appear. This can take days, weeks, months or years to occur.

Q: Will I ever be normal again?

A: Many patients who have been treated by our team approach report restored spinal curves and an end to their symptoms. Those who delay seeking appropriate care often discover that scar tissue and spinal instability requires periodic checkups.

If you are looking for a place in which the best of Medicine, Chiropractic, Physical Therapy and other Alternative treatments are used collectively, look no further we have the answer for you! Call today to learn more about how we can help you.

Back Pain

Pain of any kind is a sign something's wrong. Some people silence the pain with drugs. But that would be like removing the battery to quiet a smoke detector! Drugs may silence the painful alarm, but also overlook the cause. Although Back Pain is one of the most common conditions treated by the health care professions, it is often not treated successfully. For many people who suffered with chronic unresolved back pain, poor posture, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle and other factors may be missed and left un-addressed. We offer an Integrated Approach that looks to identify all of the factors that may influence your pain and then integrate safe, effective and comprehensive treatment options to eliminate your pain and other unhealthy factors.

Common Causes

Poor posture places increased load and stress on ones spine and nerve-rich joints of the spinal are a common cause of back pain. The pain can be a sign these interlocking "fingers" aren't moving right.

The discs between spinal bones can be involved and a source of back pain. Trauma can cause the soft, pulpy material in the middle to bulge, putting pressure on nearby nerves. Obesity and increased load on your joints along with a more sedentary lifestyle can also lead to back pain.

Your Choices

We've helped many people with a safe and natural approach that can include;

  • Medical Care-To manage the physical therapy prescribed for back pain as well as manages more conventional medical approaches when needed.
Chiropractic Care-To rehabilitate normal posture and spinal function
  • Physical Therapy-To rehabilitate normal physical functioning
  • Spinal Decompression-To decompress compressed spinal joints associated with Disc Disease and / or Herniation
  • Exercise with Oxygen Therapy(EWOT)- A natural therapy to decrease pain, without the dangers and / or side effects of over the counter medications or prescription medications.
  • Nutritional Counseling-To assist with wt loss, body composition imbalances and teach lifelong healthy eating habits
  • Massage Therapy-To loosen tight muscles
  • Acupuncture- A safe and effective treatment to reduce pain.

Our Integrated Approach Works

If you have unresolved back pain and are looking for an integrated approach, to finally put an end to your suffering, call our office today!

Bedwetting takes a tremendous toll on children. Embarrassment. Alarms. No sleepovers. Plastic mattress covers. Frustration. Unable to fit in. Even diapers.

Up to the age of four or five, most children have poor bladder control at night. But after that, the inability to stay dry at night is a sign of an underlying problem. While chiropractic is not a treatment for bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis), countless children have been helped with safe and natural chiropractic care.

During the early years of life, the sacrum has five separate segments. Later, they fuse together to form the triangular-shaped bone that adults have at the base of the spine. If these segments misalign (falling, learning to walk, ride a bike, etc.) they can compromise nerves that are responsible for bladder function.

We look for these sometimes-subtle misalignments during our examination. When these misalignments are reduced with safe and natural chiropractic adjustments, nervous system control and regulation of the bladder can be restored.

The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics document many studies showing the positive benefits of chiropractic care.

  • A study of 46 children received chiropractic care for a 10-week period. A quarter of those receiving chiropractic care had 50% or more reduction in the wet night frequency, while none among the control group saw a reduction. (JMPT 1994 (Nov-Dec);17 (9): 596-600 )
  • Children with a history of persistent bed-wetting received eight chiropractic adjustments. Number of wet nights fell from seven per week to four. (JMPT 1991 (Feb);14 (2): 110-115)
  • The lumbar spine of an eight-year-old male bed wetter was adjusted once and at a one-month follow-up. There was a complete resolution of enuresis. "This happened in a manner that could not be attributed to time or placebo effect." (JMPT 1994 (Jun);17 (5): 335-338)

Will Chiropractic Care Help?

Since chiropractic isn't a treatment for bedwetting, a thorough examination is necessary. If the bedwetting is caused by nerve interference from the spine, many children see great results with chiropractic care. Find out!

Our Integrated Approach

For other children, eating habits can be a part of the problem. Our Registered Dietitians take a thorough look at eating habits and identify additional issues that may be a part of the problem. Nutritional Counseling and at times Acupuncture can also be helpful when integrated with our Chiropractic care.

We approach these cases with sensitivity and compassion. Your son or daughter will appreciate and understand our explanations. Please call or contact us if your concern hasn't been addressed here.

Blood Disorders

Dr. Stephen Hauptman, our Medical Director, expertise goes beyond Internal Medicine. He additionally completed an internship in Hematology (the study of blood disorders). With over 40 plus years of treating and studying blood disorders, very few Physicians have his advanced training and experience in properly diagnosing and treating these rare and often times debilitating disorders.

Having cutting edge alternative treatment options like Nutritional Counseling, Chiropractic care, Physical Therapy, Acupuncture and Massage therapy allows Dr. Hauptman to offer our patients an integrated and successful approach in treating a variety of blood disorders and at the same time in improving your overall health. Please call or email today to find out more about Dr. Stephen Hauptman, our Medical Director and / or to find out how we can be of help to you.

Blood Pressure Problems

The incidence of High blood pressure and other obesity related diseases have risen dramatically over the last decade. High blood pressure is a common condition that is commonly treated by the use of medication. Although medications are often times helpful in stabilizing blood pressure, this common medical approach often overlooks safer and important treatment options. With many patients the cause of the increase in blood pressure is left un-addressed. Causes like eating habits, a sedentary lifestyle, stress and even at times increased stress on your spine and nervous system (the system that helps to regulate your blood pressure) are missed.

Chiropractors have long known that relieving neck stiffness and pain through chiropractic manipulation can lower blood pressure. In an article on the Medical News Today website, researchers discovered that there is in fact a connection between your head and neck posture and your blood pressure. This study, which was also published in the Journal of Neuroscience, provides evidence for the relationship between the positioning of your neck and certain areas of your brain that control certain body functions such as blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing. Research identified how the neck muscles and nerves are related to one another and how those nerves connect to your brain., "These findings offer a clear rationale for manipulative treatments of the neck." said researchers. Chiropractic adjustments help to increase the mobility of your neck and help to decrease your necks muscle spasm and tightness that is often caused by poor posture.

Poor posture in many cases is the cause of neck tightness and muscle spasm. Remember that "fixing" your bad posture not only can make you feel better by removing the increased stress on your neck muscles, but it also helps to remove any added stress to the neck. In many cases this can help to correct some blood pressure problems. Improving your posture is just one of the many things that can lead to better health and better overall blood pressure!

Just as having a healthy nerve system and spine is important, so is Healthy Eating and Appropriate Exercise. Our approach offers Nutritional Counseling and Exercise Testing and Prescription to get at commonly ignored yet important causes of high blood pressure. Although it has been commonly recognized by the medical community, that lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise, are causes of high blood pressure, they are often ignored. For many, our medically managed Nutritional Counseling and our Exercise Testing and Prescription are the key to permanently and naturally resolving blood pressure issues and equally important, teaching you to make lifestyle changes that will be life changing!

For those patients whose Blood Pressure problems present an immediate risk, our approach uses the most effective and safest prescription medications and at the same time integrates alternative treatment. For many patients this allows them to discontinue their use of medication, as they get healthier and have less need for it.

Carpal Tunnel

Your spine is not the only place where your joints are susceptible to fixations and malfunctions that impair normal function and range of motion. Trauma, micro-traumas, vibrations and repetitive motions are often culprits.

The Tunnel

The carpal tunnel is a band of ligaments and small bones in your wrist. Painful symptoms can result when nerves are compressed by a collapse of this nerve "tunnel."

The Spine

Many are surprised to learn that the cause of their wrist problem may be due to functional changes to one or more joints of the neck, shoulder, elbow or wrist. Subluxations in the upper spine can compromise the workings of any structure between it and the tip of your littlest finger. This is often called the double crush syndrome.

Other Extremities

Shoulders, hip problems, knees, ankles and even jaw problems can all be caused by these joint problems. Our integrated approach integrates Medical Care, Chiropractic Care and Physical Therapy before resorting to drugs or irreversible surgery!

Chiropractic and Physical Therapy First!

It just makes sense to take the more conservative approach first: chiropractic and physical therapy first, drugs second and surgery last! For those more severe cases of carpal tunnel we also offer state of the art wrist traction and medical co-management. Call today to see how we can help you!

Cholesterol Problems

The incidence of Cholesterol and other obesity related diseases have risen dramatically over the last decade. High cholesterol is a common condition that is commonly treated by the use of medication. Although medications are often times helpful in lowering some of the cholesterol levels, this common medical approach often overlooks safer and important treatment options. With many patients the cause of the increase in cholesterol is left unaddressed. Causes like eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle are missed.

Healthy Eating and Appropriate Exercise are essential treatment options! Our approach offers Medical Management that initially uses more conventional medical options like medication, to make sure that your risk for more severe health issues is lowered quickly and then integrates Nutritional Counseling and Exercise Testing and Prescription to get at real and ignored causes of high Cholesterol. In addition, we carry a variety of natural herbs and vitamins that are available only through our physician. In some cases, these more natural choices can be used without the need for medication. Although it has been commonly recognized by the medical community, that lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise, are causes of cholesterol, they are often ignored. For many, our medically managed Nutritional Counseling and our Exercise Testing and Prescription are the key to permanently and naturally resolving your cholesterol issues and equally importantly teaching you to make lifestyle changes that will be life changing!

Chronic Fatigue

Often unsuccessfully treated, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) affects many and can be an extremely debilitating condition. The severe mental and physical exhaustion of chronic fatigue syndrome often can make it hard to function. Chronic fatigue syndrome is a condition of prolonged and severe tiredness or weariness (fatigue) that is not relieved by rest and is not directly caused by other conditions. Symptoms of CFS are similar to those of most common viral infections (muscle aches, headache, and fatigue). They come on within a few hours or days and can last for 6 months or more. Other symptoms of CFS can include: an inability of feeling refreshed, headaches, forgetfulness, joint pain, lymph node tenderness, mild fever, muscle aches and muscle weakness.

The common medical approach uses a variety of medications aimed at diminishing the symptoms of this debilitating condition. Unfortunately for many, this approach does not work. For many who suffer from CFS, spinal misalignments, diet habits, a sedentary lifestyle are issues that need to be addressed. At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine, we take an integrated approach in which our Medical staff works with our Chiropractor, Registered Dietitian and others to get at the root of the problem. For many, our unique Exercise with Oxygen therapy puts an end to years of suffering. Make an appointment to end your years of suffering, call our office today!

Your tummy hurts. You have a terrible headache. You can't sleep and you're cranky. One more thing: you can't ask for help because you're only two weeks old! So you cry. And cry. And cry.

Lacking the ability to speak, newborns cry, indicating that something isn't right. And your parents feel helpless.

Infantile colic was first thought to be merely indigestion. The most widely accepted definition of colic today is "unexplainable and uncontrollable crying in babies from 0 to 3 months old, more than 3 hours a day, more than 3 days a week for 3 weeks or more, usually in the afternoon and evening hours."

Birth Trauma?

If a baby is inconsolable, it's hard to know if it's a digestive disturbance. Consider another explanation. Upon examination, we often find spinal distortions in the baby's upper cervical spine. These babies are probably suffering from head and neck pain. This is especially common if there was a difficult birth.

A 67% Reduction in Crying

The results of a randomized controlled trial published in the October 1999 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiologic Therapeutics tracked a small group of 50 infants. Half received the drug dimethicone and the other spinal manipulation. At the conclusion of the two-week study, the babies being adjusted saw a 67% reduction in crying and the drug therapy group saw a 38% reduction.

Not a Cure

Chiropractic isn't a treatment for colic! If spinal misalignments are present, interfering with the proper function of any part of the body, restoring proper nervous system control often allows the body to heal. This may happen regardless of age and regardless of what the particular symptoms are called.

Other factors

At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine, we take an integrated approach. A mother who is breastfeeding must be careful of taking medications and be mindful of what she eats. Our Registered Dietitians look closely at mom's eating habits to make sure there aren't any food choices that might be contributing to the baby's colic.

Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. Cancerous cells are also called malignant cells. Symptoms of cancer depend on the type and location of the tumor. For example, lung cancer can cause coughing, shortness of breath, or chest pain. Colon cancer often causes diarrhea, constipation, and blood in the stool.

Cells are the building blocks of living things. Cancer grows out of normal cells in the body. Normal cells multiply when the body needs them, and die when the body doesn't need them. Cancer appears to occur when the growth of cells in the body is out of control and cells divide too quickly. It can also occur when cells "forget" how to die.

There are many different kinds of cancers. Cancer can develop in almost any organ or tissue, such as the lung, colon, breast, skin, bones, or nerve tissue.

Some cancers may not have any symptoms at all. In certain cancers, such as gallbladder cancer, symptoms often do not start until the disease has reached an advanced stage. The following symptoms can occur with most cancers; chills, fatigue, fever, loss of appetite, malaise, night sweats and weight loss.

There are many causes of cancers, including; exposure to harmful chemicals (Benzene, some chemicals added and found in unhealthy food), viruses, radiation, over exposure to the sun, tobacco and other harmful things.

At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine, we teach our patients about the importance of living healthy lives and avoiding those harmful causes of cancer. For many patients who have come to us already suffering from cancer, we are able to integrate cutting edge medical care, with safe and helpful alternative therapies that help you to cope with disease and the side effects of conventional medical treatment. Chiropractic care, Physical therapy, Nutritional counseling, Massage Therapy and Acupuncture can all be used to assist you in recovering from and becoming healthier. Remember, the stronger your body and your immune system are, the better chance your body has to heal and recover from cancer and any other disease.

Depression and Mood Disorders

The two key symptoms of depression are a depressed mood and loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed. Besides these two key symptoms, a few other depression symptoms include restlessness and irritability, thoughts of death or suicide, and feelings of hopelessness and pessimism. It is important to keep in mind that people suffering from depression cannot simply "pull themselves together." Symptoms of depression can last for weeks, months, or years.

In certain cases, patients can alternate between periods of depression and mania, also known as bipolar disorder or manic depression. Depression (and the fluctuation between depression and mania) is thought to be caused by alterations in serotonin levels in the brain.

How Chiropractic, Physical Therapy and Nutrition to Depression & Bipolar Disorder

While medical science has not determined the exact cause of altered serotonin levels that are suspected to produce depression and bipolar disorder, recent research has pointed towards a likely trauma-induced origin for certain cases of mood disorders. Evidence supports that trauma (in particular mild concussive injury to the head, neck or upper back) increases the risk of onset of depression. Following the trauma, mood disorders can be triggered immediately or can take months or years to develop.

Chiropractic care may reverse the trauma-induced injury; thereby reducing irritation to the injured nerves in the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord).

Numerous research studies have documented improvement in depression and related symptoms as a result of chiropractic adjustments which reduce pressure on the brain stem and spinal cord caused by misaligned vertebrae.

In addition a sedentary lifestyle and poor choices in food can also be linked to our mood. By encouraging our patients to exercise often times through therapeutic exercise managed by our Physical Therapist, many patients experience relief from depression. In addition, our Registered Dietitian works closely with our patients to determine what dietary changes can be made to assist in elevated mood and a healthier person. Our unique Exercise with Oxygen Therapy is a tremendous added therapy that significantly improves thewell being and state of mind of many of our patients. At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine, our integrated approach is a one of a kind team effort that will leave you feeling happy and invigorated, ready to get back to your life. Diabetes is a chronic (lifelong) disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood.

High blood levels of glucose can cause several problems, including: blurry vision, excessive thirst, fatigue, frequent urination, hunger and weight loss. However, because type 2 diabetes develops slowly, some people with high blood sugar experience no symptoms at all.

Patients with type 1 diabetes usually develop symptoms over a short period of time. The condition is often diagnosed in an emergency setting.

The immediate goals are to treat diabetic ketoacidosis and high blood glucose levels. Because type 1 diabetes can start suddenly and have severe symptoms, people who are newly diagnosed may need to go to the hospital.

The long-term goals of treatment are to prolong life, reduce symptoms and prevent diabetes-related complications such as blindness, heart disease, kidney failure, and amputation of limbs.

At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine, these goals are accomplished through our integrated approach in which our Medical staff helps to make sure that your blood pressure and cholesterol levels are controlled. With some patients, chiropractic care has been helpful in making sure blood pressure is at a healthy level. Our Registered Dietitian plays a critical role in making sure that your eating habits are modified appropriately to help to manage the diabetes. In addition appropriate exercise is another critical component that is often managed by our Chiropractic and / or Physical Therapy.

Although, there is no cure for diabetes, many of our patients are able make the appropriate changes to ensure themselves and active and healthy life. Call today to make an appointment!

Digestive Problems

The digestive system is an intricate system that can be disrupted by disease, diet, and emotional stress. Common digestive problems such as heartburn/GERD, IBD, and IBS cause millions of Americans to suffer daily and limit quality of life. Digestive problems often result in symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, gas, stomach pain, and stomach cramps. Learning more about the digestive system may help with managing these problems. Whether it's mild nausea, a nasty virus, or a chronic disorder such as irritable bowel syndrome, a disorder of the digestive tract is usually impossible to ignore. If the condition persists, it can undermine our total health, eventually threatening our very lives.

At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine, we evaluate all of the possible causes for digestive problems. For some, stress and eating habits are critical causes of digestive problems. Our Medical staff along with our Registered Dietitian helps to identify these common causes. For those patients who experience significant stress, Chiropractic care and Massage therapy can also be helpful. Our unique integrated approach identifies all of the causes of your problems and then integrates comprehensive treatment to safely and effectively manage your problem. Disc Injuries and Disease

Disk conditions and injuries such as degenerative disk disease and herniated disks are among the most common type of problems causing back pain or neck pain. Degenerative disk disease is wear and tear on the disks located in between each vertebra. These interveterbral disks, protect the spine by absorbing shock while the body is in movement.

If pain due to the wear and tear on the disks persists longer than 3 months, doctors call this degenerative disk disease.

Degenerative disk disease happens when our disks lose suppleness and water. This can be due to the normal aging process, genetics or an injury to the area.

As the disks harden, their ability to absorb shock diminishes. This change can affect the position of spinal bones and the ligaments that connect them together. In turn, a nearby nerve may get pinched and/or muscles may spasm.

The 24 vertebrae of your spine are separated from one another by pads of cartilage called discs. These discs have a fairly tough outer layer with a soft interior to cushion against the shocks and strains experienced as you move and put various stresses on your spine.

The discs are subject to injury, disease, and degeneration with use over time. Certain activities and types of work increase the risk of discs being damaged or deteriorating. When the soft interior material of a disc pushes out through a tear or weakening in the outer covering, the disc is said to be herniated or bulging.

At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine, we offer an integrated approach to your disc and spine related injuries. One in which we integrate our Medical Care, Chiropractic Care, Physical therapy and Massage therapy when needed.

Disc injuries often respond favorably to chiropractic care since chiropractic focuses on the dysfunctional spinal segments and not just the symptoms of the disc injury. Pain killers, anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxants can be prescribed when our Medical Director feels they are necessary, but they do nothing to treat the cause of disc injuries and have been shown to induce further injury.

Chiropractic adjustments along with Physical Therapy modalities, provide fast, effective, safe and long lasting relief from disc injuries. The chiropractor's approach restores normal spinal alignment, spinal function and overall spinal health, which are primary factors responsible for the development of disc injuries.

Good spinal function can help reduce the occurrence of disc bulging. Regular chiropractic adjustment keeps joints functioning normally which in turn look after the health of the disc. Chiropractic care can also avoid the risk of inflammation of the surrounding soft tissues, ensuring the health of all parts of the spine.

For those patients who have severe disc disease and injuries, Spinal Decompression is often helpful. Spinal Decompression is a safe and effective treatment option that very few health care providers can offer their patients. Call today to make an appointment and to get your life back!

Vertigo, or dizziness, is a symptom, not a disease. The term vertigo refers to the sensation of spinning or whirling that occurs as a result of a disturbance in balance (equilibrium). It also may be used to describe feelings of dizziness, lightheadedness, faintness, and unsteadiness. The sensation of movement is called subjective vertigo and the perception of movement in surrounding objects is called objective vertigo. Treatment for vertigo, or dizziness, depends on identifying and eliminating the underlying cause. If a particular medication is responsible for the condition, lowering the dosage or discontinuing the drug may eliminate vertigo.

Chiropractic, Physical Therapy and Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy
Our Chiropractic and Physical Therapy services along with Vestibular rehabilitation therapy can be used to effectively treat vertigo. The goal of treatment is to minimize dizziness, improve balance, and prevent falls by restoring normal function of the vestibular system.

Our integrated care that combines Chiropractic, Physical Therapy and VRT, helps to allow the brain to adapt to and compensate for whatever is causing the vertigo. For many patients the addition of our Exercise with Oxygen Therapy is a much needed addition helping to permanently resolve dizziness and vertigo. Call today to learn more about how we can help you.

Ear Infections

As parents, it makes us feel so helpless. Our child is suffering but there seems little that we can do. No wonder reoccurring ear infections (otitis media) account for a huge number of pediatrician visits. The traditional approaches include:

Ear infections aren't the result of a drug shortage or deformed Eustachian tubes!

Medication and Antibiotic therapy. This may be effective for acute bacterial infections, but many cases are viral, for which antibiotics are useless.

Tubes in the ears. Some pediatricians will recommend surgical implantation of artificial drainage tubes. This surgery often requires the administration of risky anesthesia. Ironically, in with many children, the tubes then come out!

However, many parents are choosing a more conservative approach:

Chiropractic care. A thorough examination to locate misalignments in the child's spine, and then gentle and safe adjustments to reduce nerve disturbances that may make the ears prone to infection.

Ear infections aren't the result of a drug shortage or deformed Eustachian tubes! Our children's bodies have an incredible capacity to fight infection. When that ability is impaired, it often means something else is going on.

Nerve Compromise

Many parents are surprised to learn that some of the nerves that control, regulate and monitor the ear begin in the brain stem, continue down the spinal cord and exit out from between the bones of the spinal column in the neck area.

Changes to the function of the bones in the upper neck may compromise the quality of the nerve signals to and from the brain. This can in turn affect the ability of any organ or tissue, in this case your child's ear, to work properly and "defend itself" from infection.

Impaired Drainage

Nerve compromise is often accompanied by abnormal tension to the muscles that support the spine. Besides "protecting" the spine from further compromise, these muscle spasms can exert pressure on nearby lymphatic drainage ducts. This can prevent natural drainage, further compounding the problem.

Our Approach

Our approach is simple. For many of the children we care for, we use an integrated approach which combines our gentle Chiropractic approach with at times Massage therapy and other times Acupuncture. Since chiropractic care isn't a treatment for infections of any type, when parents bring their child for us to check, we look specifically for distortions in the upper spine. If nerve tension is detected, we gently reduce it with safe and natural chiropractic treatment. This helps restore nervous system integrity. For a child or infant, this usually requires little more than a light touch with our fingertip at just the right place and direction.

Many parents love our approach. We explain everything in advance. Our approach is safe and results are achieved naturally. Give us a call. We'd like to help.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disorder that affects millions of Americans each year-primarily women-and can be both physically and emotionally distressing. Fibromyalgia sufferers experience widespread chronic muscle pain and often times extreme fatigue, sleep problems, tender points beneath the skin, depression and anxiety.

The condition is mainly characterized by a series of tender points (often confused with trigger points, which are associated with chronic myofascial pain). The pain associated with these points is usually quite superficial-seemingly right beneath the skin.

Our Integrated and Unique Approach to Fibromyalgia
Because conventional medicine, often times unsuccessfully diagnosis and treats Fibromyalgia, patients have been seeking alternative treatment options and have found tremendous success with Chiropractic Care, Massage Therapy, Nutritional Counseling and Acupuncture. Because fibromyalgia causes numerous tender points all over the body, many fibromyalgia patients suffer from back pain, neck pain, and leg cramps. In an attempt to solve these problems, many sufferers have looked to chiropractors. Because simple adjustments to the neck and spine can restore the carriage of the whole body, a lot of fibromyalgia sufferers find that alignments of the spine can significantly reduce pain all over their bodies.

Upper Cervical Spinal Stenosis
Many fibromyalgia patients suffer from a condition called upper cervical spinal stenosis. This causes the coverings of the upper spine, known as meninges, to become compressed. This can cause severe, debilitating pain all over the body. Chiropractors can adjust the head and neck so the spine is no longer compressed, helping to relieve the widespread pain symptoms of fibromyalgia.

How Effective is Chiropractic Care in Fibromyalgia Patients?

Numerous studies have been conducted analyzing the benefits of chiropractic care in fibromyalgia patients. A 1985 study asked 81 fibromyalgia patients to indicate drug or alternative treatments that best relieved their pain. Chiropractic care treatment scored surprisingly high in this study. Another study examined the effectiveness of spinal manipulation in relieving fibromyalgia symptoms. After just 15 treatments, fibromyalgia patients suffered from less pain and fatigue, and actually enjoyed better sleep quality.

Our Unique Approach

In addition, Massage therapy plays a critical role in helping to eliminate those tender spots. At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine, our approach does not stop there. For many who suffer from Fibromyalgia, dietary habits are also a contributing factor. Our Registered Dietitians work closely with our team to help our patients make changes in food choices that may also be a part of the problem. In addition, Our Exercise with Oxygen Therapy has been an extremely successful addition to our treatment and many who have suffered from Fibromyalgia have found significant relief! There are many different types of Headaches and in today's fast paced world they are common, but they're not normal.

Drug Culture

While convenient, drugs that numb your nervous system have side effects, such as kidney failure or liver damage. Worse, they don't actually correct the underlying cause of the headache.

Hidden Cause's

There are many common causes of headaches that unfortunately are often overlooked by much of our health care system. Stress, food choices and neck positioning are all common causes of headaches. Headaches frequently are the result of the poor posture (frequently forward head posture) which causes the spinal bones in the neck to not support the head properly. This places significant increased tension on your spine and neck muscles and frequently leads to reduced ability to turn your head. These spinal misalignments affect nerves, muscles and even the blood supply to your head. Unhealthy diet and too much stress can also be causes of headaches.

Our thorough and integrated approach looks to identify all of the causes of your headaches and then integrates safe, natural and effective treatments to eliminate your headaches and more importantly the possible causes of your headaches. Many of our patients who suffer from headaches have successfully used our integrated approach which frequently combines our Medical Care with our Chiropractic, Physical therapy, Nutritional Counseling and Massage therapy. Our thorough and unique approach is one of a kind. Give us a call! Let's sit down, discuss your unique situation, and put an end to your needless suffering!

AIDS is a chronic, life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). By damaging your immune system, HIV interferes with your body's ability to fight off viruses, bacteria and fungi that cause disease. HIV makes you more susceptible to certain types of cancers and to infections your body would normally resist, such as pneumonia and meningitis. The virus and the infection itself are known as HIV. "Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)" is the name given to the later stages of an HIV infection.

An estimated 39.5 million people have HIV worldwide. Though the spread of the virus has slowed in some countries, it has escalated or remained unchanged in others. The best hope for stemming the spread of HIV lies in prevention, effective treatment and education.

Because of the nature of HIV and its effect on the immune system, and the unfortunate side effects of many of the successful medications used to treat HIV, patients with HIV and or AIDS suffer from a large variety of symptoms and conditions. These often include High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Pain and Neuropathy, Weakness, Fatigue, Depression and other mood disorders. Therefore a multifaceted approach is ideal!

One of Dr. Stephen Hauptman, our Medical Director's specialties is in HIV. Because of Dr. Hauptman's training in hematology (the study of your blood) and Immunology (the study of your immune system), he has successfully treated and cared for thousands of patients with HIV. Considered one of the City's best HIV Physicians, Dr. Hauptman's compassionate, and comprehensive approach is unsurpassed! Dr. Garret Hauptman, our Wellness Director and Chiropractor joined his father 10 years ago and has been co-managing many of Dr. Hauptman's HIV patients as well. Very few if any other Chiropractors have the experience of working with patients who suffer from HIV.

Our unique approach integrates current Medical treatment, with Chiropractic Care, Physical Therapy, Nutritional Counseling, Massage Therapy and Acupuncture. There is no more comprehensive or effective approach. Call today to learn more about how we may be able to help you.

Infertility refers to the biological inability of a man or woman to contribute to conception. This may also refer to the state of a woman who is unable to carry out a pregnancy completely, affecting over six million woman and their partners across the country. Fertile woman experience natural periods of fertility before and during ovulation, but are naturally infertile during the rest of the menstrual cycle.

Infertility is most commonly treated by harmful medications which can have an endless amount of side-effects and negative adverse reactions. In vitro fertilization can also be used, but unfortunately these high-cost treatments are all very expensive and usually out of financial reach for many people.

Experiencing infertility can bring on a range of painful emotions in one or both members of the couple. In general, having at least one child already tends to soften these painful emotions.

For some who suffer from infertility, the answer lies simply in what they are eating and for others in their poor posture, abnormal pelvic positioning and the increases stress it places on their nervous system. Our unique approach evaluates both of these possible factors.

The nervous system controls and coordinates all the different functions of your body including your reproductive system. Any disruption in nerve communication to your organs and body tissues will result in abnormal function. The nerve roots serving the reproductive organs (both male and female) exit the spine in the lower lumbar region, the most common site of back pain and spinal dysfunction.

Chiropractors help restore normal nerve function and communication, thereby allowing your body to work normally and naturally. In addition, our Registered Dietitian looks closely at your eating habits to identify any food choices that may be linked to the problem. For others, Acupuncture has been shown to also be helpful in treating infertility. Why not try these safer and more natural approaches, prior to engaging in high risk drug and surgical interventions. Safe, non-invasive chiropractic care may be all you need!

Impotence is a common problem among men characterized by the consistent inability to sustain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse or the inability to achieve ejaculation, or both. Impotence can vary. It can involve a total inability to achieve an erection or ejaculation, an inconsistent ability to do so, or a tendency to sustain only very brief erections.

Erectile dysfunction is the failure to get an erection, or keep an erection long enough for satisfactory lovemaking. It isn't a disease, but a symptom of some other problem, either physical, psychological or a mixture of both. Contrary to popular belief, the majority of cases have physical causes, with only one in ten cases of impotence being caused by psychological problems. Some of the causes include drunkenness, anxiety and tiredness. Smoking, high cholesterol levels, medications, antidepressants, trauma and anabolic steroid use are all other risk factors that play a role in erectile dysfunction. Statistically, up to 50% of men over the age of 40 have some degree of erectile problem. From this data, an estimated 30 million men in the United States are affected by some degree of ED.

Most physicians suggest that treatments proceed from least to most invasive. For some men, making a few healthy lifestyle changes may solve the problem. Quitting smoking, losing excess weight, and increasing physical activity may help some men regain sexual function. Our Registered Dietitian can play a key role in helping patients to manage these issues.

Cutting back on any drugs with harmful side effects is considered next. For example, drugs for high blood pressure work in different ways. If you think a particular drug is causing problems with erection, tell your doctor and ask whether you can try a different class of blood pressure medicine.

Psychotherapy and behavior modifications in selected patients are considered next if indicated, followed by oral or locally injected drugs, vacuum devices, and surgically implanted devices. In rare cases, surgery involving veins or arteries may be considered.

The nervous system controls and coordinates all the different functions of your body including your reproductive system. Quality erections require proper blood flow and innervations of the sex organs. Any disruption in nerve communication to your organs and body tissues will result in abnormal function. The nerve roots serving the reproductive organs exit the spine in the lower lumbar region, the most common site of back pain and spinal dysfunction. Chiropractors help restore normal nerve function and communication, thereby allowing your body to work normally and naturally. Have your spine checked prior to engaging in high risk drug and surgical interventions. Safe, non-invasive chiropractic care may be all you need.

Immunological Issues

An immunological disease results from the disorder of the immune system. It may fall into one of these categories: allergic diseases, autoimmune diseases, immune complex diseases, and immunodeficiency disorders.

Allergic Diseases

The most common types of allergic diseases occur when the immune system responds to a false alarm. In an allergic person, a normally harmless material such as grass pollen or house dust is mistaken for a threat and attacked.

Allergies such as pollen allergy are related to the antibody known as IgE. Like other antibodies, each IgE antibody is specific; one acts against oak pollen, another against ragweed.

Autoimmune Diseases

Sometimes the immune system's recognition apparatus breaks down, and the body begins to manufacture T cells and antibodies directed against its own cells and organs. Misguided T cells and autoantibodies, as they are known, contribute to many diseases. For instance, T cells that attack pancreas cells contribute to diabetes, while an autoantibody known as rheumatoid factor is common in people with rheumatoid arthritis. People with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have antibodies to many types of their own cells and cell components.

No one knows exactly what causes an autoimmune disease, but multiple factors are likely to be involved. These include elements in the environment, such as viruses, certain drugs, and sunlight, all of which may damage or alter normal body cells. Hormones are suspected of playing a role, since most autoimmune diseases are far more common in women than in men. Heredity, too, seems to be important. Many people with autoimmune diseases have characteristic types of self marker molecules.

Immune Complex Diseases

Immune complexes are clusters of interlocking antigens and antibodies. Normally, immune complexes are rapidly removed from the bloodstream. Sometimes, however, they continue to circulate, and eventually become trapped in the tissues of the kidneys, the lungs, skin, joints, or blood vessels. There they set off reactions with complement that lead to inflammation and tissue damage.

Immune complexes work their mischief in many diseases. These include malaria and viral hepatitis, as well as many autoimmune diseases.

Immunodeficiency Disorders

When the immune system is missing one or more of its components, the result is an immunodeficiency disorder. Immunodeficiency disorders can be inherited, acquired through infection, or produced unintentionally by drugs such as those used to treat people with cancer or those who have received transplants.

Temporary immune deficiencies can develop in the wake of common virus infections, including influenza, infectious mononucleosis, and measles. Immune responses can also be depressed by blood transfusions, surgery, malnutrition, smoking, and stress.

Our unique integrated approach combines the expertise of Dr. Stephen Hauptman, our Medical Director, who specializes in Immunology (the study of your immune system) with comprehensive wellness services that strengthen and improve your health. Improved posture and a healthier human frame, from our Chiropractic and Physical Therapy services is one part of our approach. Healthy eating habits taught to you by our Registered Dietitian are the second. Decreased stress through Massage therapy and appropriate exercise are the final keys to making your body and immune system as strong and healthy as possible. This gives you and your body the best chance to cope and fight of the immunological issue. Call today to learn more about our unique approach!

Leg Pain / Numbness

Quite often leg pain or foot pain is not caused by a problem in the leg or foot, but rather by a condition in the lower back. Diagnosis of leg pain and other lower extremity symptoms should focus not only on the legs and hips, but should also include examination of the low back. In fact, with many low back problems, there is actually little or no low back pain. Instead, there may be leg pain, foot pain, and/or lower extremity numbness or weakness.

Compression or pressure on any of the nerve roots in the low back can cause pain, numbness or weakness along the different nerves as they travel down through the leg and into the foot. Because the sciatic nerve is commonly affected, leg pain and related symptoms are often generally referred to as sciatica, although medical professionals prefer the term radiculopathy.

Not all leg pain derived from low back problems presents the same way. Leg pain caused by a low back problem is often accompanied by additional symptoms, such as leg numbness and tingling or weakness, or foot pain, and the type of leg pain experienced may vary widely from patient to patient.

Some typical descriptions of leg pain and accompanying symptoms include:

  • Leg numbness or tingling. Anyone who has had a leg or foot 'fall asleep' and then gradually return to normal can imagine what numbness in a leg would feel like. Not being able to feel pressure, or hot or cold, is unnerving. Unlike the short-lived numbness of a limb that is asleep, numbness coming from a low back problem can be nearly continuous and can severely affect a person's quality of life. For example, it can be difficult or almost impossible to walk or drive a car if one's leg or foot is numb. Typical symptoms can range from a slight tingling sensation to complete numbness down the leg and into the foot.
  • Weakness (foot drop) or heaviness. Here, the predominant complaint is that leg weakness or heaviness interferes significantly with movement. People have described a feeling of having to drag their lower leg and foot or being unable to move their leg as quickly and easily as needed while walking or climbing stairs, for example, because of perceived weakness or slow reaction. Patients with foot drop are unable to walk on their heels, flex their ankle, or walk with the usual heel-toe pattern.
  • Burning pain. Some leg pain sufferers experience a searing pain that at times radiates from the low back or buttocks down the leg, while others complain of intermittent pain that shoots from the lower back down the leg and occasionally into the foot. Words that patients use to describe this type of burning leg pain include radiating, electric or shooting pain that literally feels like a jolt. Unlike many forms of low back pain that can often be a dull ache, for many, leg pain can be excruciating and nearly intolerable. This type of burning pain is fairly typical when a nerve root in the lower spine is irritated, and it is often referred to as sciatica.
  • Constant pain. This type of pain is normally felt in the buttock area, so it is not technically leg pain but it may accompany some form of pain felt in the legs. It may also be pain that occasionally radiates past the buttock into the leg. This type of pain is usually described as "nerve pain," versus an aching or throbbing pain. It is typically present only on one side, and is commonly called sciatica. It may often be relieved by stretching, walking or other gentle movement.
  • Positional leg pain. If leg pain dramatically worsens in intensity when sitting, standing or walking, this can indicate a problem with a specific part of the anatomy in the low back. Finding more comfortable positions is usually possible to alleviate the pain. For example, bending over may relieve pain from spinal stenosis, while twisting (as in a golf swing) can increase facet joint related groin, hip and leg ache.

There are a variety of ways these types of symptoms can be treated. Chiropractic care has been rated among the best and most successful. At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine, we take an integrated approach that often integrates Chiropractic Care, Physical Therapy, Medical Care, Massage therapy and even Acupuncture to get at the root of the problem. For some patients who additionally suffer from disc disease, our Spinal Decompression and Exercise with Oxygen therapy are key additions to our treatment program. Call today to end your suffering!

Neck Pain

Imagine balancing a 12 lb. (5.5 kg.) bowling ball on the tips of your fingers-All day long.

That's just one of many things your neck must do. Your neck and shoulders work hard. Even the smallest deviation in the relationships of the seven bones of your cervical spine (neck) can cause pain and reduced head and neck mobility. Poor posture can lead to a myriad of problems; the most common is neck pain.

Your neck is one of the most nerve-rich areas of your spine. Problems here can cause problems throughout your body.

Response to Stress

Physical, emotional or chemical stress can affect the frequency and severity of neck pain. For many of us, the neck and shoulders are the "weakest link in the chain" and so stress shows up here.

For many who suffer from chronic neck pain, emotional stress is the overlooked culprit. Ever hear of something being a "pain in the neck"? Fear, anger or frustration can trigger the tightening of our neck muscles without our even being conscious. In time, chronic muscle spasms set in, which can lead to headaches. For some, over-the-counter pain relievers might dull the pain, but it ignores the underlying cause!

We specialize in reducing interference to the nervous system in the neck. Many of our practice members find that chiropractic care gives them relief from both minor and major neck and shoulder complaints.

At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine we see this sort of thing all the time. It's almost routine. Many of the services we offer can effectively treat and resolve neck pain. Chiropractic Care, Medical Care, Physical Therapy, Massage Therapy have all been shown to be helpful. However, our Chiropractic care has a history of producing excellent results with those suffering from neck pain. For more severe cases of Neck pain, our approach integrates Medical Care, Physical therapy and Massage therapy. For most patients, we do it naturally, without drugs or surgery.

Call our office or email us today and end your years of suffering.

Neurological Problems

Neurologic diseases are disorders of the brain, spinal cord and nerves throughout your body. Together they control all the workings of the body. When something goes wrong with a part of your nervous system, you can have trouble moving, speaking, swallowing, breathing or learning. You can also have problems with your memory, senses or mood.

There are more than 600 neurologic diseases. Major types include

  • Diseases caused by faulty genes, such as Huntington's disease and muscular dystrophy
  • Problems with the way the nervous system develops, such as spina bifida
  • Degenerative diseases, where nerve cells are damaged or die, such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease
  • Diseases of the blood vessels that supply the brain, such as stroke
  • Injuries to the spinal cord and brain
  • Seizure disorders, such as epilepsy
  • Cancer, such as brain tumors
  • infections, such as meningitis

Because we offer a diversity of health care services, we offer a comprehensive and effective approach to many neurological issues. For many who suffer from neurological issues, poor posture is an often missed and important factor in their lives. Poor posture places excessive stress and tension on the spine and nervous system. Chiropractic care focuses on the spine and in removing those imbalances. At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine, we are proud to be one of the only health care centers in Philadelphia to offer Chiropractic care that rehabilitates and corrects these missed and critical postural problems. Our approach also when needed, integrates the expertise of our Medical Director, Dr. Stephen Hauptman. For many patients our Physical Therapy program offers additional help as does our Massage Therapy. Call today to find out how we can help end your years of suffering from your neurological issues.

Peak Performance

Over the last 10 years, many Americans have begun to understand the importance of working proactively to be healthy as opposed to waiting to be sick. For many, improving posture, eating habits, decreasing stress and exercising are key components to improved health and decreased chance of illness.

These secrets to being healthy can also be used to naturally enhance your performance in life. Whether it is your physical or mental performance, our pillars of health can give you the edge you have been looking for. Normal or healthy posture allows your body and its muscles to be in their ideal position, making many muscles stronger and less stressed and allowing your spine and the nervous system it protects to work optimally. Chiropractic care and physical therapy have both been shown to help many improve and optimize their physical performance. In addition, by properly fueling your body, through healthy eating, you can give your body that extra edge you have been looking for. Managing stress through massage therapy can also give you an edge above and beyond your competitor. Whether you are a serious athlete or a weekend warrior, our integrated approach can help give you that extra edge you have been looking for!

Pinched Nerve

It's called a pinched nerve because that's what it feels like. But there's a lot more going on!

The 24 moving bones of your spine protect your spinal cord while permitting normal turning and bending. Pairs of nerve roots, one on each side, branch off your spinal cord at each segmental level to service the organs and tissues of your body. When these openings are unobstructed, your brain can't properly control and regulate your body.

When a spinal bone is mal-positioned, it can encroach upon these important nerve openings. Nerve irritation can result. That is called a subluxation. When spinal bones lose their normal motion or position, it can cause one of two types of nerve disturbances:

  • Compressed lesion - This is just a fancy name for a pinched nerve. What surprises many is that it's actually quite rare. More common is a...
  • Facilitative lesion - This is when the nerve root is stretched, twisted or chafed. Think: hard tissue rubbing on soft tissue.

But remember, bones are static structures. They don't move unless muscles move them. And muscles don't move bones unless commanded by the nervous system. An irritated nerve creates a vicious loop. Our job is to locate these areas of your spine and reduce their impact on your nervous system. A thorough examination helps us identify areas of your spine where spinal bones are stuck and not moving correctly. Then, we give them a precise little nudge called a chiropractic adjustment. Your body uses this energy to "right itself" as nerve irritation is reduced. Because chiropractic addresses the integrity of your nervous system, it's a natural solution to many health problems. Our integrated approach does not end there. For many patients our Medical management and Physical Therapy are effective additions to your treatment plan. For those patients who suffer from disc injuries that are associated with the pinched nerve, we are proud to be one of the few health care centers that additionally offer Spinal Decompression. Call today to learn more about how we can help to end your suffering!

PMS Premenstrual Syndrome

Estimates suggest that up to 90% of women suffer from some form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) with 10 -20% experiencing severe or disabling symptoms. If you're resolved not to give in to menstrual or premenstrual discomfort, and you want a natural solution that avoids drugs, many women turn to alternative treatments like Chiropractic and Acupuncture for relief.

Your nervous system controls and regulates every cell, tissue, organ and system of your body. The spine, especially in the lower back, can impair nerves that direct and monitor the reproductive and hormonal systems. Women with undetected subluxations can suffer from a wide variety of female health problems including pelvic pain, PMS, incontinence, sexual dysfunctions and even infertility. It's not all in your head! If there's evidence of nerve compromise to your reproductive organs, Chiropractic care may help.

Three types of effects can result when proper nervous system regulation of the reproductive system is disturbed from the abnormal motion or position of spinal bones.

  • Over activity – such as heavy bleeding or severe cramping.
  • Under activity – including missed periods or infertility.
  • Distorted activity – cells that normally line the uterus, implant elsewhere causing bleeding, pain and reduced fertility.

While chiropractic care isn't a treatment for PMS (or any other condition), many women with spinal distortions have seen an improvement in their reproductive health while under chiropractic care. Restoring a more normally functioning nervous system helps the entire body work the way it's supposed to. Acupuncture and Massage therapy have also been used successfully to help. For many of our patients, our integrated approach, in which we use Chiropractic care, Massage Therapy and Acupuncture together makes all the difference in the world. If you, or someone you love, are put out of commission every month, encourage her to come in for a thorough examination; there's a good chance we can help.

Poor Posture

Poor posture and improper motion and/or position of your spine, can stretch and irritate your spinal cord and nerves and can overload your spine, compromising the healthy functioning of your nerve system and consequently the health of your entire body. Our unique Chiropractic care corrects these imbalances and takes unwanted stress off of your nerves, greatly improving the communication between your mind and body, allowing your body to express its health. A structurally sound body is more resistant to stress and is able to function at its truest potential.

Good posture... It's more than just standing up straight!

Poor posture places extra stress and tension on your body's muscles, bones, ligaments, joints, and nerves. This increased stress can lead to any number of disease states, causing you to experience a variety of symptoms and making you unhealthy. "Postural corrective care" incorporates spinal manipulative therapies, postural exercises and other therapies to restore your normal posture which allows your body to function better. Dr. Garret Hauptman is one of a handful of doctors that specializes in posture correction. This type of chiropractic posture correction is at the forefront of chiropractic and health research. In the pictures below, you can see an example of patients improved posture from our postural corrective care.

Doctors of Chiropractic are primary healthcare providers trained to diagnose specific diseases and ailments of the body, just as traditional physicians do. Chiropractic care has been shown to be effective in treating a myriad of conditions, such as neck, back, shoulder, arm, and leg pain; headaches; depression; ADHD; dizziness; hypertension; anxiety; and many, many other conditions. However, the goal of chiropractic care is to improve the overall structure and function of the human form in order to promote its self-healing capabilities. Improved posture can be life-changing. It typically manifests itself in improved health of the whole body.

Our unique and integrated approach combines our Chiropractic and Physical Therapy services and allows you to experience unsurpassed health care and health improvement!

Keeping the spine healthy can remove unwanted stress from your body and nerves and help the entire body work more effectively. Chiropractic care, before and during pregnancy, can do many things that ultimately help to maintain a healthier pregnancy: help with fertility issues, control symptoms of nausea, relieve neck and back pain, relieve sciatica, and joint pain, reduce labor and delivery time, help to turn a breech baby and can help to prevent cesarean section.

Nutritional Counseling. Without a doubt, a Healthy Eating Plan can be one of the greatest gifts you give to your soon-to-be-born baby. Supplying your own body with an appropriate and healthy blend of nutritious foods can help your pregnancy in many ways; improve your fertility, and increase your energy level. A good diet keeps you feeling healthy during pregnancy and can pave the way for an easier labor. Healthy eating also helps to establish the essential building blocks of growth and overall health for your child. The dietary choices a pregnant woman makes determines the basic nutritional health that our children are born with and provides a model for their eating habits during their childhood. Pregnancy is the one time in your life when your eating habits directly affect another person. At HFHC, our Registered Dietitians will help to teach you how to eat healthy for your pregnancy so that you can give yourself and your baby the greatest gift of all: a healthy start!

Prenatal Massage. Therapeutic massage has been used for centuries to improve overall health, reduce stress, and relieve muscle tension. Studies indicate that massage therapy performed during the second and third trimester of pregnancy (prenatal massage) can reduce stress and anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pain, reduce the swelling associated with pregnancy, improve circulation, reduce headaches, improve oxygenation of your muscles, help the pregnant woman to sleep better. All of these things work to improve labor outcomes which in turn can improve the health of your newborn.

Acupuncture. Acupuncture is the insertion of ultra-thin, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points on the body which reside on channels or meridians; pathways in both the exterior and interior of the body. These points, when needled, can regulate the way in which the body functions. Acupuncture can help with infertility, pain, nausea, mood swings, and some types of back and muscle pain. Acupuncture is a safe and natural compliment to your prenatal care.

Scoliosis seems to mainly affect girls between the ages of 8 to 18. Scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. It begins as a postural distortion and can become a permanent deformity. Allowed to advance, it can interfere with the lungs, heart and many other vital organs.

Three Causes

  1. Congenital genetic predisposition
  2. Habitual behavioral routines
  3. Idiopathic unknown cause

Regardless of cause, early detection is essential. An alert parent may notice that a high shoulder or low hip make clothing fit poorly. Or uneven shoe wear offers a clue. Back and leg pains may develop but are often dismissed as growing pains. Wait and See? Allowed to run its course, scoliosis often worsens. Severe cases may involve unsightly bracing or surgery that attaches steel rods, forcing the spine to straighten.

Our Unique Integrated Approach

Chiropractic care and Physical therapy are a more natural solution. A schedule of specific chiropractic adjustments along with physical therapy can help improve the function and structure of the spine. At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine, we take your care and treatment of Scoliosis one step further. We are one of a handful of health care centers that with many patients can permanently correct Scoliosis. Dr. Garret Hauptman, our Wellness Director and Chiropractor is one of a handful of Chiropractors that has been trained to rehabilitate functional scoliosis.

We've helped a lot of young people with scoliosis. Bring your child in so we can discuss your concerns and explore the possibilities.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually transmitted diseases (also called STDs, or STIs for sexually transmitted infections) are infections that can be transferred from one person to another through sexual contact. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are over 15 million cases of sexually transmitted disease cases reported annually in the United States. There are more than 25 diseases that are transmitted through sexual activity. Other than HIV, the most common STDs in the United States are Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes, human papillomavirus, hepatitis B, trichomoniasis, and bacterial vaginosis. Adolescents and young adults are the age groups at the greatest risk for acquiring an STD. Approximately 19 million new infections occur each year, almost half of them among people ages 15 to 24.

Some STDs can have severe consequences, especially in women, if not treated, which is why it is so important to go for STD testing. Some STDs can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, which can cause infertility, while others may even be fatal. STDs can be prevented by refraining from sexual activity, and to a certain extent, some contraceptive devices, such as condoms.

Most STDs affect both men and women, but in many cases the health problems they cause can be more severe for women. If a pregnant woman has an STD, it can cause serious health problems for the baby.

If you have an STD caused by bacteria or parasites, our experiences Medical staff can help! Dr. Stephen Hauptman, our Medical Director has been successfully treating STD's for well over 40 years. Our unique integrated approach gives Dr. Hauptman, other treatment options that can complement the more traditional medical interventions. Shoulder Injuries/Problems

Shoulder injuries are frequently caused by athletic activities that involve excessive, repetitive, overhead motion, such as swimming, tennis, pitching, and weightlifting. Injuries can also occur during everyday activities such washing walls, hanging curtains, and gardening.

Your shoulders are the most movable joints in your body. They can also be unstable because the ball of the upper arm is larger than the shoulder socket that holds it. To remain in a stable or normal position, the shoulder must be anchored by muscles, tendons and ligaments. Because the shoulder can be unstable, it is the site of many common problems. They include sprains, strains, dislocations, separations, tendinitis, bursitis, torn rotator cuffs, frozen shoulder, fractures and arthritis. Shoulder problems have been shown to be successfully treated by Conventional Medical Care, Chiropractic care, Physical therapy and at times Massage and Acupuncture can be helpful as well.

Our unique approach integrates our medically managed Physical Therapy with Chiropractic care and Massage therapy at times to give our patients quick healthy recovery from shoulder injuries. Call our office today and end your years of suffering!

Skin Problems

Did you know that your skin is the largest organ of your body? It is, in terms of both weight, between 6 and 9 pounds, and surface area, about 2 square yards. Your skin separates the inside of your body from the outside world. It

  • Protects you from bacteria and viruses that can cause infections
  • Helps you sense the outside world, such as whether it is hot or cold, wet or dry
  • Regulates your body temperature

Conditions that irritate, clog or inflame your skin can cause symptoms such as redness, swelling, burning and itching. Allergies, irritants, your genetic makeup and certain diseases and immune system problems can cause dermatitis, hives and other skin conditions. Many skin problems, such as acne, also affect your appearance.

Skin problems are common for people of all ages. Whether you suffer with a rash, itchy skin, skin fungus or infection, skin bumps, or skin tags, there's good treatment available for a variety of skin diseases. If you have oily or dry skin, talk to our doctor about your particular skin condition and learn the best methods to clean, treat, and protect your skin.

Our unique and integrated approach combines conventional Medical treatment with safe and natural alternative treatment options. For many who have suffered from years of skin problems, the underlying cause or causes get overlooked. Stress, unhealthy food choices and other factors frequently are a part of the problem. Our approach combines the more conventional medical options with using natural treatment options like Massage therapy and Chiropractic to reduce stress and Nutritional Counseling to "clean up" unhealthy eating habits. Sleep Problems

Sleep problems cause more than just sleepiness – a lack of quality sleep can cause accidents, affect your relationships, health, and mental prowess, and make you feel generally "disconnected" from the world. If your sleeplessness is caused by a tough deadline or a common cold, you might not have trouble getting your sleep back on track after the deadline or cold go away, but if you have trouble sleeping on a regular basis, this guide to managing common sleep problems and disorders can help you be well on your way to experiencing healthy, restorative sleep.

Everyone experiences occasional sleep problems, but getting a good night's sleep is essential for feeling refreshed and alert during the day. Lack of sleep might make you feel foggy and unable to concentrate, or just a lesser version of your normal self. Sleep problems will eventually disrupt your work, family and personal relationships.

Conventional medical treatment looks to treat the symptom of sleep issues, by using medication to help you to sleep. Our unique and integrated approach also looks to identify the cause or causes of your difficulty sleeping. Stress, poor eating habits are often over looked. Sometimes, pain and poor posture can also play a role. At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine, we identify these underlying causes and then incorporate a multifaceted approach to help you to get better sleep and at the same time remove those underlying causes. Many of our patients have experienced much improved sleep while participating in our Medical care, Chiropractic Care, Nutritional Counseling and Massage therapy. Call today to get a good night sleep!

Slipped Disc

A disc can't slip. But it can wedge, bulge, protrude and become herniated. The most serious disc problem is a prolapsed disc in which the soft center ruptures and leaks. The disc is a special type of cartilage between the bones of your spinal column. It attaches to the vertebra above and below it. This creates the separation between spinal bones so pairs of nerves can exit the spine and the disc serves to absorb much of the weight of your body as you exist and move in gravity.

Each spinal disc has a jelly-like "ball bearing" core that is contained by bands of fibrous tissue. Healthy discs give you flexibility for normal turning and bending. Improper lifting, slips, falls and car accidents can cause the core to shift and the below types of injuries can happen:

Herniation - disc wedging narrows nerve openings. Obvious symptoms may not be present.

Protrusion - like a blister, the disc bulges where it is the weakest, causing nerve pressure.

Prolapse - with the cushioning and separating compromised by rupture, movement is painful.

Mild Disc injuries have been shown to be effectively managed by Conventional Medicine, Physical Therapy and sometimes by Acupuncture. The most effective treatment for Disc Injuries is Chiropractic Care. At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine, we offer you an integrated approach to manage and rehabilitate spine and disc injuries. Using the latest and most effective treatment modalities we combine our Chiropractic Care with Medically Managed Physical Therapy. There simply is no better way! For those patients with severe and long standing Disc Injuries, our state of the art Spinal Decompression therapy and Exercise with Oxygen therapy make our program the most comprehensive and effective in our community! Call today to end your years of needless suffering!

Sports Injuries

Exercising is good for you, but sometimes you can injure yourself when you play sports or exercise. Accidents, poor training practices or improper gear can cause them. Some people get hurt because they are not in shape. Not warming up or stretching enough can also lead to injuries.

The most common sports injuries are

  • Sprains and strains
  • Knee injuries
  • Swollen muscles
  • Achilles tendon injuries
  • Pain along the shin bone
  • Fractures
  • Dislocations

If you get hurt, stop playing. Continuing to play or exercise can cause more harm. The first thing that is important is that you have your injury properly diagnosed. At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine, our Medical Doctor, Chiropractor and Physical Therapist have years of experience identifying and treating sports injuries. Our comprehensive and integrated approach helps to quickly and safely manage and rehabilitate sports injuries and at the same time can offer you the opportunity to improve your health diminishing your chances of other injuries. Millions of Americans suffer from stress and stress related illness. For many who suffer from stress, years go by with no effective management and as a consequence the symptoms get worse and worse and worse.

Not all stress is bad. A 20-minute workout at the gym for a fit 25-year old is good stress. The same workout for your 75-year old grandmother would likely be bad stress! There are different types of stress;

  1. Physical Stress-Repetitive motions (painting the ceiling), postural distortions (falling asleep with your neck twisted) and whiplash injuries from a car accident are physical stresses. So are slips and falls. Even being born!
  2. Emotional Stress-Ever faced an impossible deadline at work? Or grieved the loss of a loved one? Notice the posture of someone who is depressed. Frustration or a sense of powerlessness, are common forms of emotional stress.
  3. Chemical Stress-Today's environment constantly assaults us with chemicals. Drugs, preservatives, tobacco, alcohol, vaccinations, pollen and a host of other substances can affect our nervous system and muscle tone.

Left untreated, Stress can become a deadly condition. For many who suffer from Stress, recognizing and acknowledging they feel stressed is the first step. Our Integrated approach looks to identify all of the causes of stress; poor posture, lack of sleep, poor eating habits, not enough downtime… are all possible causes. After we have identified all of the causes of your stress, we then integrate the appropriate lifestyle changes and treatment modalities to remove the cause(s) of your stress. Chiropractic Care, Massage Therapy, Our Medical Care, and Nutritional Counseling, Exercise with Oxygen Therapy and at times herbal treatment, are all possible treatment modalities. Call our office today and end your years of needless suffering!

Vitamin Deficiencies

The body needs many different vitamins to function adequately. A lack of one or more vitamins may cause symptoms that may be mild or severely debilitating depending on the vitamin and the period of deficiency. Vitamin deficiency may be associated with inadequate dietary intake or with certain conditions such as alcoholism and malabsorption syndromes where the body is unable to efficiently absorb nutrients and vitamins from the food that has been eaten.

Vitamins are essential to healthy living, and they perform best when there are adequate amounts of each and every one. There are many different types of vitamins, each having its own specific benefit to various parts and functions of the human body. While the human body still may be able to perform without the appropriate levels of just a few vitamins for a short period of time, hundreds of years of research point towards disease and sickness as a result.

Each vitamin has a complex of symptoms and signs that characterize its deficiency. Currently, the most important benefit attributed to vitamins in general is their anti-oxidant properties. Vitamins A, C, E, and many of the carotenoids and phytochemicals are scavengers for particles known as oxygen-free radicals (or oxidants). These chemically active particles are by-products of many of the body's normal chemical processes. Their numbers are increased by environmental assaults, such as smoking, chemicals, toxins, and stress. The simple act of living also produces them, as we breathe in oxygen constantly.

At moderate to high levels, oxidants and free radicals can be very harmful. They can damage cell membranes and interact with genetic material, possibly contributing to the development of a number of disorders including cancer, heart disease, cataracts, and even the aging process itself. Oxygen-free radicals can also enhance the dangerous properties of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, a major player in the development of atherosclerosis. Antioxidant Vitamins A, C, E, carotenoids, and many phytochemicals can neutralize free radicals, and may reduce or even prevent some of their damage.

For instance, deficiencies of Vitamins A, C, E, and beta carotene have been linked to heart disease. All of these nutrients have antioxidant effects and other properties that may benefit the heart. Vitamin E may prevent blood clots and the formation of fatty plaques and cell proliferation on the walls of the arteries.

Many health care centers ignore or overlook the importance of Vitamins. At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine, we understand the importance of having proper Vitamin levels and more importantly the importance of the getting the appropriate Vitamins from the foods we eat. Our Medical Staff looks closely at your blood to identify those Vitamins you may be deficient in and with our Registered Dietitian, looks at your eating habits to identify the cause of your deficiency. For some patients, changing eating habits, through our Nutritional Counseling is more than enough to correct these imbalances. For other patients, Vitamin therapy may also be needed. Our integrated and comprehensive approach has helped thousands of patients over the years. Call today to learn more about how we may be of help to you!

Weight Loss

Obesity is a chronic disease. Being overweight is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of 25.0 to 29.9, while obesity is defined as having a BMI of 30.0 or above. Your body mass index (BMI) is a measurement that is derived from a calculation of your weight relative to your height. Your BMI correlates fairly well with the amount of total body fat that you have.

Being overweight or obese is hazardous to your health. Unfortunately our country's perceptions of what a healthy weight is, has become skewed. It has been estimated that 40% of Americans who are overweight, consider themselves to be "about right" or "underweight". In 1985, the US Surgeon General warned that as a result of being overweight or obese, 34 million Americans were at risk for developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer. Since then, the numbers of Americans at risk has almost tripled. According to the 1998 National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute report, over one-half of all Americans are now overweight or obese. Recent estimates attribute about 112, 000 deaths each year in the US to obesity, making it second only to cigarette smoking as a cause of death.

Medical disorders such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, and gallbladder disease are associated with obesity. Obesity has been shown to increase the risk of developing high blood pressure, adult-onset diabetes, heart attack, stroke, degenerative joint disease of the back and knees, gallstones, and certain forms of cancer such as that of the breast, prostate, and colon. Obese women commonly can have infertility problems, irregular menstrual flow, and urinary incontinence.

The good news is that there is help and treatment for you! At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine, our Medical staff looks to identify all of the causes and associated issues, with your obesity and then looks to offer you reasonable and appropriate lifestyle changes and treatment to help you to lose weight and equally importantly to improve your health. Our Weight Loss program combines the expertise of our Medical Director, Dr. Stephen Hauptman, who manages your care as well as any other health issues that you suffer from, with our Registered Dietitians who work closely with you to teach you how to make life time changes with your eating habits. For many, appropriate exercise is also needed. Both Dr. Stephen and Garret Hauptman, work with our patients to prescribe the proper form of exercise and with many patients oversee this critical component to your care. Call today and take the first step to shedding those unwanted pounds!

To visit the doctor when you're feeling great is something new. Yet, a growing number of people who want to be as healthy as possible and do their best proactively to be healthy. For years, many people are visited their chiropractors to be healthier and for wellness.

Most of us learned to think that having symptoms means you're sick. But what about pre-symptomatic health problems? Remember staying home from school when we were sick and returning when we were feeling better? We learned to think of being sick as having obvious symptoms. This belief is now killing us. These days, most of us die from lifestyle-induced diseases whose first symptom is... death!

The reverse is true as well. If you eat improperly prepared food and find yourself vomiting to expel it, you probably won't feel good, but you're having a healthy response. Turns out that true health is how well our bodies work, not how we feel.

How well our body functions is based upon the integrity of what we at Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine refer to as the pillars of health. These Pillars include; Disease Prevention and Health Maintenance, A Healthy Human Frame, Healthy Eating, A Healthy Mind, Energetic Balance and Appropriate Exercise. That's why so many seek our practice for wellness care. They want to make sure that every component needed to be healthy is being addressed. It just makes sense to detect little problems before they become serious concerns and to proactively work towards being as healthy as possible.

True health is optimum physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Drinking more water, having healthy posture, eating nutritious foods, regular exercise and virtually every other healthy habit produces even bigger dividends when these activities or pillars are done collectively!

At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine, our Wellness services extend beyond our chiropractor. All of our health care providers understand the importance of proactively being healthy. Therefore many of our patients visit our Medical Doctor for a wellness check up, or our Registered Dietitian for a healthy eating check up. Call today and begin your journey

You're waiting at a stoplight. The sound of screeching tires is followed by the harsh sound of metal hitting metal. Your car is suddenly being pushed forward!

You're being rear-ended!

In a split second, your body is pushed against your seat. Your head, isolated by your neck, delays its reactions. Symptoms of whiplash injuries often show up long after your car has been repaired.

Then, your body changes directions, moving forward to the limits of your seatbelt. (You are wearing your seatbelt aren't you!?!) Then your head is snapped backwards. But you can't stop it.

Even a minor fender bender can produce a whiplash injury. It may take a day or two, or sometimes months for symptoms to appear. Now what?

Get to our practice for an examination! Our Medical Staff, Chiropractor, Physical Therapist and at times Massage Therapist and Acupuncturist, work hand in hand to help you to safely and effectively manage your injury. For most patients, medications aren't even needed! Pain pills won't heal inflamed tendons and ligaments. Muscle relaxers won't heal torn muscles.

The longer you wait the more unseen damage there can be and the longer it may take to recover. Drugs may temporarily reduce the pain, but they simply cover up the need for the restoration of proper spinal function.

At Fairmount Family Integrative Medicine, our integrated approach has been helping those who suffer from Whiplash for many years. Call our office today and end your suffering!
